Great Lakes Yacht Club

A family-friendly private sail and power boat club offering yachting amenities at an affordable price. Great Lakes Yacht Club was formed in 1952. Originally known as The Island Boat Club and located on the Detroit River, the club leased its current property in 1954, began construction of the clubhouse and was renamed Great Lakes Yacht Club (GLYC). In 1963 GLYC acquired title to its current beautiful lakeside grounds in St.Clair Shores. Since its inception, GLYC has valued diversity. Originally founded by a Jewish membership, GLYC was among the first clubs in the region to grant membership to women, and in 1983, Commodore Eve Kommel was elected as the club’s first female Commodore. GLYC has maintained a strong sailboat racing tradition for decades. Its racing program includes the annual 1+1 Regatta, its longstanding DRYA Counter Series Regatta, and the popular Fall Series, providing competitive racing opportunities throughout the sailing season. Today, GLYC’s membership includes a diverse community of power and sailboat owners. Members continue to enjoy the club’s beautiful Lake St. Clair grounds, an active boating community, and the camaraderie that membership in GLYC has afforded for more than 70 years.
